Dry Scalp Problems

By Barbara Turner

Itchy scalp treatment is never fun to manage. Even the best dandruff shampoos can fall short. Bearing this in mind, it is best to consider other ways to combat the incessant itching, scratching, and embarrassing flakes on all your dark garments that goes along with having moderate to severe dandruff. Itchy, flaky scalp is often caused by calcium deposits and cold weather.

## You Must Stop Scratching

Dry and itchy scalp can be a major problem, especially when the itching is severe. The effects of dry and itchy scalp are devastating. But scratching is no way to alleviate the problem. In fact, this could make the problem worse and have a number of negative effects:

- Sore scalp

- Reddened scalp

- Thinning hair

## Don't Cover It Up

Hats, scarves, and other coverings hide dandruff, but they definitely do not solve the problem. Hats can trap oils on the scalp, worsening irritated scalps and pulling out already-thin hair. Dandruff can be caused by too-dry skin AND too-oily skin. If you must put on a hat, it must be washed frequently, not worn extensively, and should have a silk or satin lining that glides against the hair instead of rubbing at it and the scalp itself. However, light hats can be helpful in warm weather due to the fact that both hair and scalp can be damaged by the sun.

## Diet Plays A Role

The secret to battling dandruff may be sitting in your fridge right now. Your hair needs lots of nutrients, and dandruff may be your hair's way of telling you that. Dieting or eating disorders can also impact your scalp's health. Fortunately, foods that benefit hair health usually benefit heart health as well! You can kill two birds with one stone while being happy and healthy. Some things you can add to your diet to improve hair health:

- Omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon

- Zinc often found in oysters, walnuts, or supplements

- Vitamin A from carrots and spinach

- Selenium from Brazil nuts

- Protein

- Iron

- Low-fat dairy

- Whole grains

- Fresh fruits and vegetables

## Make It Work

Sometimes, the best dandruff shampoo isn't doing the job because it simply isn't being left on the scalp for enough time. Multiple washes and rinses, and leaving the shampoo on the scalp for a minimum of five minutes may end up making the shampoo more effective. Using warm water not cold or hot water and combing shampoo through the hair may also be helpful. Read the instructions on the back to be sure.

## See Your Doctor

Sometimes, persistent dandruff or ineffective itchy scalp treatment can be a sign of a bigger underlying health problem. If you just aren't able to get rid of the flakes, consult a health professional.
